Volume Rendering of the 1999 Chi-Chi Earthquake

cluster

Direct volume rendering is used to depict the space-time relationships of seismic readings collected from sensor stations. The resulting visualization reveals the sequence of seismic wave initiation, propagation, attenuation over time, and energy releasing events.

HIPerWall is a 200 mega-pixel tiled display wall consisting of fifty 30" LCDs and a cluster of Mac G5s. A distributed visualization system was developed to render large-scale datasets on HIPerWall. The designated control node broadcasts viewing parameters to all other nodes. After receiving the messages, each rendering node updates its display content.

Computation on Programmable Graphics Hardware

Hardware-assisted visualization of seismic wave propagation. From the benefits of GPU's stream processing power, the rendering speed was increased by moving intensive computation away from CPU. The 1994 Northridge earthquake ground movements are augmented with terrain models to provide geographically anchored data that can be more easily conceptualized and analyzed

Large-Scale Seismic data Visualization

Alaska

Visualization of large field-measured seismic datasets. Case studies include NEIC earthquake records, SCIGN GPS network readings, and ground movement measurements obtained from various seismic networks.

The studied building is a 7-story reinforced concrete structure located in central San Fernando Valley, California. The California Strong Motion Instrumentation Program (CSMIP) manages the seismic instrumentation installed throughout this building. A detailed 3-dimensional model of the building was built.  The field measured datasets are discretely mapped onto the geometric model and used to generate temporal simulations reproducing the deformation patterns.

Parallel Computing

flow

Developed a parallel computing algorithm on a cluster of 25 machines. This approach shows a significant improvement in rendering capacity over existing methods for terrain rendering.
