Shen-Ming Chen(陳生明) received his PhD degrees in chemistry from National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan. He was a visiting postdoctoral fellow with the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany in 1997. He had been an associate professor of Department of Chemical Engineering, National Taipei Institute of Technology, Taipei, Taiwan from 1991 to 1997. Since August 1997, he has been a professor of Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, National Taipei University of Technology, Taipei, Taiwan. From 2010, he has been a Distinguished professor of Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, National Taipei University of Technology, Taipei, Taiwan. He has been the Dean(Curator) of library, National Taipei University of Technology, Taiwan from 2000 to 2006 and the Director of Extracurricular Activity, office of student affairs, National Taipei University of Technology, Taiwan from 1995 to 2000.
His research interest includes Nanocomposite materials research, organic electrochemistry, bioelectrochemistry, conducting polymer Electrochemistry, Nanoelectrochemistry, chemical sensors, biosensors, electrocatalysis and electroanalysis.

Michael Faraday
Ever since the chemists John Frederic Daniell and Michael Faraday founded electrochemistry as known today, a great deal of research has been conducted in this field during the second half of the 20th century. Briefly, it is a typical branch of chemistry with numerous sub branches that studies the reactions which take place at the interface of an electronic conductor (electrode) and an ionic conductor (electrolyte).

Dr. Leland C. Clark
The concept of biosensing started when Leland C. Clark demonstrated the measurement of glucose concentration in solutions using Clark oxygen electrode. He is considered to be the father of biosensor technology. Since then, a great deal of development had taken place in biosensing technology. Among them the approach of electrochemical studies with modified electrodes showed interesting applications.
Chemically modified electrodes (CMEs) have evolved as a recently emerging field and much study of interest have been shown by many researchers in this field. In detail, the chemically modified electrodes comprise an approach to electrode system design that finds the use in a wide spectrum of basic electrochemical investigations, including the relationship of heterogeneous electron transfer and chemical reactivity of electrode surface chemistry, electrostatic phenomena at electrode surface, and electron as well as ionic transport phenomena in polymers, and the design of electrochemical devices and systems for applications in chemical sensing, energy conversion and storage, molecular electronics, electrochromic displays and electro-organic synthesis.
There are different types of modifying materials investigated viz. mediators or the catalysts, such as carbon nanoparticles, polymers, metal nano particles, metal oxides, dyes, heavy molecular weight biomolecules, enzymes etc. We are interested in studying the mechanisms of these reactions with the aim of defining the role of the mediators and catalysts, including the nature of the substrate binding.
Typical examples of research work done in our lab on the modification of electrodes for biosensing applications are given below:Ø The functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (fMWCNTs), gold nanoparticles (Au) with hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD) as catalysts for the simultaneous determination of tyrosine, guanine, adenine and thymine.
Ø Application of f-MWCNTs, metal nanoparticles and polymer modified electrodes for the simultaneous determination of neurotransmitters with ascorbic acid.
Ø Sensors made of metal oxides and copolymers for the detection of NADH, hydrogen peroxide and oxygen.

The film formations and the electrochemical characterization can be done using the various CHI CV instruments available in our lab; these include RDE, RRDE, EQCM, EIS, SECM, etc. SECM is used for the electrochemical active sites imaging of modified electrodes. Physical characterization of these electro-catalysts in our recently completed projects was generally done by AFM,SEM and XFS instruments in our department.


Specific Studies
Biofuel
Cell
Reduction of dioxygen catalyzed by laccase was studied at platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) modified electrodes. PtNPs with laccase are directly fabricated on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and indium tin oxide electrode (ITO) by simple process. The PtNPs/laccase modified ITO electrode surface has been studied in detail using atomic force microscopy (AFM). This PtNPs/laccase modified GCE effectively exhibits the electro reduction signals for the detection of oxygen. PtNPs provided large surface area for laccase base on modified electrode. The PtNPs present on the electrode provided electrical connectivity between the electrode and the enzyme active sites. The cyclic voltammetry (CVs) has been used for the measurement of electroanalytical properties of analytes by means of modified electrodes. The stabilities of laccase, the reduction potentials and ratios of catalytic to background currents were compared. The power densities of biofuel cell was 84 mW/cm2 at 0.62 V, respectively. The biofuel cell showed highly stable output in long-term performance. Efforts are underway to improve the interface transfer to achieve higher potential and current output.

Photoelectro-catalysis
Herein we report the photoelectrocatalytic regeneration of NADH at poly(4,4-diaminodiphenyl sulfone)/ nano TiO2 (PDDS/TiO2) composite modified indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode. The PDDS film growth was confirmed through in situ electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) studies. SEM and AFM results confirmed that TiO2 nanoparticles size is between 130 and 180 nm. XRD results showed that TiO2 nanoparticles are crystalline and belong to anatase phase. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) results demonstrated that composite film showed excellent response to the photoelectrocatalytic regeneration of NADH. The photoelectrocatalytic oxidation of NADH at composite film surface irradiated for 5 min (optimized irradiation time) produced a notable enhancement in anodic peak current and it was 18-fold higher than that of PDDS film and several folds higher than that of TiO2 and bare ITO electrodes. Further, composite film showed higher sensitivity of 124.1AM−1 for NADH. Further, the composite film exhibits good selectivity towards NADH and no significant interference effect was observed even when 200-fold excess of ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA) coexist in the same supporting electrolyte solution.

Simple electro deposition method was employed for the fabrication of platinum- ruthenium bimetallic nanoparticles (PtRu NPs) modified poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) coated on the indium tin oxide (ITO) at room temperature. The formation mechanism of PtRu NPs film is monitored by cyclic voltammetry (CV) techniques and atomic force microscopy (AFM). It is found that PtRu NPs/PEDOT/ITO photo cathode increased the reactive interface, which supports charge transfer at the interface and had higher electrocatalytic activity for the I3−/I− redox reaction and a smaller charge transfer resistance than the Pt/ITO photo cathode. With a PtRu NPs/PEDOT/ITO photo cathode as a counter electrode of DSSC, a 16.5% improvement in the cell efficiency is achieved.

Electrochemical Sensors and Biosensor
Electro-oxidation of NADH can be enhanced by the hybrid composites of polyluminol and functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The hybrid composites can be easily prepared by the electropolymerization of luminol and the adsorption of functionalized MWCNTs. This modified electrode exhibits two redox couples which can show two electrocatalytic peaks at about 0.1 and 0.3 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) to NADH oxidation. The kinetic constant, kkin, for the electrocatalytic oxidation of NADH, evaluated by chronoamperometry and voltammetry using a rotating disk electrode (RDE), provided values close to 105 M-1 s-1. Applied potential at 0.1 V, the sensor provides a linear response range for NADH from 5×10-6 up to 1.5×10-4 M with a sensitivity of 183.9 μA mM-1 cm-2, and detection and quantification limits of 0.6 and 5 μM (S/N = 3), respectively.

A simple method to immobilize poly(neutral red) (PNR) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) hybrid film (PNR/FAD) by cyclic voltammetry is proposed. The PNR/FAD hybrid film can be easily prepared on electrode surface involving electropolymerization of neutral red (NR) monomers and the electrostatic interaction between the positively charged PNR and the negatively charged FAD. It exhibits electroactive, stable, surface-confined, pH-dependent, nano-sized, and compatible properties. It provides good electrocatalytic properties to various species. It shows a sensitivity of 5.4 μA mM-1 cm-2 and 21.5 μA mM-1 cm-2 for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) with the linear range of 0.1 μM–39 mM and 5×10-5–2.5×10-4 M, respectively. It shows another linear range of 48.8–355.5 mM with the sensitivity of 12.3 μA mM-1 cm-2 for H2O2. Particularly, the PNR/FAD hybrid film has potential to replace some hemoproteins to be a cathode of biofuel cells and provide the biosensing system for glucose and ethanol.
